WSHS Clubs
Spanish Society: The Spanish Society organizes a variety of activities to provide cultural experiences. They have monthly meetings or get-togethers, which include a Christmas breakfast in December. The dunking booth at Food and Forest Day and at Willowfest is always a great fundraiser. Their most spectacular and popular fundraiser is the Spanish Dinner and Show, which is completely done by Spanish Society members. Members are either currently in a Spanish class or have been in the past. Membership dues are only $10.00, which pays for the Society’s T-shirt. All of the money raised goes toward their trip in the spring. Olé! Sponsored by Mrs. Griffith.
Youth Summit: WSHS takes part in the Howell County Youth Summit. This community service oriented club focuses on community improvement, while interacting with students within Howell County. Sponsored by Mr. Spence.
Interact: A high school club affiliated with the local Rotary Club. This is a club that members can grow with, by starting in high school, continuing with Rotaract in college, and then with Rotary in adulthood. The purpose of the club is to involve members in community service, civic and social activities and preparation for present and future leadership. Members assist the local Rotary Club with Rotary auctions and other fundraisers. Group members can contact other Interact members around the world. Meetings are during lunch, once a month. Drama/Speech/Debate Club: The members participate in a variety of speech and debate contests throughout the year. Club members entertain a variety of local groups, do fundraising activities, and go on a field trip at the end of the school year. Sponsored by Mr. Spence.
Student Council: WSHS STUCO is made up of eighteen members who are elected by the students, and then try to make school a little more exciting. Student Council plans Homecoming, Hoop Queen, Winter Ball, two blood drives, a high school picnic, and the spirit competition. They are constantly looking for ways to recognize our students and to make WSHS a great place to go to school. Sponsored by Mrs. Ward.
Quiz Bowl/Academic Team: Participants are allowed to compete against other schools in all areas of academics and trivia. It is a small team looking for new minds to enhance the team. Sponsored by Mrs. Ward.
Math Teams: The math department competes in a variety of competitions which include: SMSU Pummill Math Relays, SCA Math and Science Competition, Great Plains Math League, and UMR Engineering competition. Sponsored by Mr. Jackson.
Agriculture Education (FFA): WSHS FFA chapter has been recognized as the number 11th Chapter of all Missouri chapters and is in the top 10 chapters in the Nation, in Student Development, and for the last three years we have been the top Area 10 chapter. We have many students competing at the state and national level for awards and honors. Last year we had two state winning student proficiency awards and had nine students receiving the American FFA Degree, the highest award FFA offers. Our FFA chapter currently has 139 students. We are very active in the community with the NWTF, Hometown PRIDE, and Bears for a Better Christmas. We also have fun activities each month such as trap shooting, float trips, bowling, skating, softball and many more. We attend many leadership conferences, National FFA Convention, and the State FFA Convention , to help develop our students’ leadership abilities. New programs and tools within the WSHS FFA program include: a plasma cam, new greenhouse, aquaculture lab, new computer lab, hydroponics lab, a school farm and a cattle operation. Medical Explorers: The Medical Explorers Club is sponsored by St. Francis Hospital in Mountain View, Missouri. To participate, students must undergo four hours of orientation at the hospital. After orientation, students are able to volunteer time in any of the various departments of the hospital. More training is necessary if the student wishes to volunteer in the emergency room or to travel with the ambulance. Medical Explorers is an excellent opportunity to find out if a medical career is right for you. Students must pay dues and purchase special scrubs from the hospital. The cost for the first year is approximately $30.00 and $7.00 thereafter. Sponsored by Sharon Petrus.
National Honor Society: NHS – Is a club, which recognizes high school students who exhibit a combination of outstanding academic achievement, character, and service to the community. Students must have a GPA of 3.7 or higher, and be recommended by faculty as having superior leadership and character. Sponsored by Mrs. Miller.
Teen Readers: Teen readers explore literature – from fantasy and science-fiction to historical or modern fiction. Members choose one book per semester to read, analyze, and discuss through book club meetings. Participants are encouraged to read at leisure and attend meetings. One field trip, to a library or bookstore, is a possibility at the end of the year. Sponsored by Ms. Daugherty.
Science Olympiad: Science Olympiad is an international organization devoted to improving the quality of science education and increasing student interest in science through a competitive science tournament. Sponsored by Mrs. Miller.
Industrial Arts Wood Tech Club: Students work on community projects. They have approximately five social events each year combined with work evenings. Any Industrial Tech student can join. Sponsored by Mr. Wehmer.
Art Club: Students meet to do community oriented visual art projects. This club is open to all students regardless of skill level. Sponsored by Mr. McGarry.
Pep Club: A club for students in 9-12 to show their support for our High School Athletic teams. We meet monthly, have officers, and our dues are $2. The members get in free to all home athletic games. We do one fundraiser per year to raise money for a trip, such as a MU game or a Cardinal game. Sponsored by Mrs. Pitts.
Lady Letterman: The purpose of Lady Letterman is to establish pride in being a high school female letterman. Our goal is to provide an opportunity to develop leadership abilities within our team members and future leaders of our community, state, and nation. Sponsored by Coach Jackson.
Future Business Leaders of America: FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is an organization to help develop leadership skills in the area of business. Students participate in the District 14 Leadership Conference, where they take tests in different areas of business. Some of the contests are paper-and-pencil, some are computer-based, and some are group presentations. The qualifiers at District go to the FBLA State Leadership Conference in Columbia, MO. All FBLA members are encouraged to attend at least one Willow Springs Chamber of Commerce meeting during the year. We have various activities throughout the year, such as District 14 Planning Meeting, Food Harvest, FBLA Week activities, MO Chamber of Commerce High School Business Symposium, and raising money for March of Dimes. All students are eligible to join, because all have taken or are currently in a business class. The dues are $11 this year. Sponsored by Mrs. Pettit.
JAG is a national organization and its acronym stands for Jobs for America’s Graduates. In JAG, students will be involved in leadership development activities, job skills training, and career exploration. We will also initiate fundraisers to support various organizations, individuals, and for our activities. We have officer meetings before school and during lunch. The membership due is $5.00 which will go towards the cost of t-shirts and our INI ceremony planned for October 31st. Two seniors will get the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. in December. We will also be involved in a state competition during the month of February. Members will go on an end of the year field trip. Sponsored by Mrs. Doss
