*Please open the file, go to File menu and choose “Save As” and save it on your computer. Fill in the forms during the year and have them ready for printing at the end of the year. Consider keeping a backup copy (please back up data after each modification).
Important dates
- Aug 30 – If you are new to the district, notify the building (HS, MS, ES) team to the stage you are to be at. This is courtesy to the team rather than a state requirement, so that all numbers and records can be given to the state.
- Oct 1 – Individual Career Ladder Plans due.
- Nov 1 – Plan revisions due
- May 1 – You may begin to accumulate hours for the next year’s plan. This is different from previous years and has been changed to reflect current DESE guidelines. If you are able to count hours up to May 1 for this year, please do so. If you are unable, continue your plan for this year and know that this goes into effect for 2008-09.
- May 1 – All responsibilities and time logs must be completed, signed, tallied and submitted for final approval. Blue sheets must be complete and accurate.

GUIDELINES FOR DEVELOPING
ACCEPTABLE CAREER LADDER RESPONSIBILITIES
NOTE: Teachers are expected to develop their own responsibilities.
The examples provided are meant to stimulate your thinking in some acceptable areas. Responsibilities teachers write will be reviewed on an individual basis. The responsibility must be related to student instruction, general school/teacher improvement and parent/school/student relationships.
NOTE: Remember that any activity that takes place during the regular contracted day (8:00 am – 3:00 pm) is not acceptable.
- Completion of college credit from an accredited college as approved for the salary schedule will count as eight (8) Career Ladder Hours for each hour of college credit. No more than 1/3 of the total career ladders may be professional development [college & workshops, etc.]. Attendance at professional workshop, meetings, seminar or conference as approved by the building principal and/or professional development committee.
- Write an implementation plan for classroom or building use.
- Hours spent in duties in a leadership capacity in a professional or subject area organization.
- Develop or revise a curriculum guide in a particular area.
- Participate in a curriculum related activity involving students and/or parents.
- Develop innovative teaching methods of mainstreaming disabled/disadvantaged students into the classroom.
- Develop and participate in special instruction programs for remedial/enriched/gifted students above and beyond regular contracted duties.
- Write a district-approved grant.
- Organize and/or assist in a district professional development or workshop activity.
- Develop creative teaching materials to supplement particular teaching areas.
- Serve as a non-paid sponsor of a curriculum related student organization.
- Develop and implement a home-school communications plan.
- Develop and/or coordinate a building orientation for new students and parents.
- Tutor students above contract time in a curriculum area.
