The Willow Springs Arts Council is presenting the 2012 Film Festival to be held at the Star Theater. The movies are free to the public and we are always interested in sharing with the youth in our community.
January 13 – Double Feature “Frankenstein” and “Little Shop of Horrors”
FBLA MEMBERS: You must pay your dues by January 31st in order to compete at and attend the District contest in February. It is only $15.00 which pays your local, state and national dues. Also testing is coming up very soon…..so be sure you are studying so we can go to Nationals!
Engineer Girl! Food Engineering Essay Contest – 2012 – Students in grades 9-12 choose a food from a given list and explain how it is produced, from the planting and harvesting of raw material to being ready to eat. Choose a technology critical to one or more steps in that process and explain how it works. Describe how different types of engineers (e.g. civil, mechanical, electrical, etc.) might have contributed to the design of the technology as well as key elements of that design. Talk about what engineers are currently doing to improve this technology. Be sure to include references. (no more than 1500words) Go to www.engineergirl.org/CMS/Contest/food2012.aspx to apply. Deadline: Entries must be received by 6:00 p.m. (EST) on March 1, 2012
Christos House 2nd Annual Writing Contest –February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Prevention Month, and Christos House is sponsoring a Writing Contest. The theme is “Love What’s Real.” It can be a poem, song, prose, story, or essay. The length should effectively communicate the message. The work must be creative and original. Avoid cliché words and images constantly seen in the media. Entries will be judged on effectiveness of message, creativity, originality, and imagery. Pick up a submission form from Mrs. Petrus and then submit your entry to christoshousesupport@hotmail.com. Deadline: February 10, 2012

1. SENIORS: Deadline for senior pictures for the yearbook is February 3rd. If you have any questions see Mr. Spence.
2. Archery practice will be starting Monday, January 9th. We will be having practice every Monday from 3:15-4:30 in the Ag shop. Please remember you must have your signed permission slip turned in or you will not be allowed to practice. Also dues are $10 and that will cover your membership and your shirt for competition. Please make sure that you make arrangements to have your ride pick you up promptly at 4:30 at the Ag building.
3. JUNIORS: The University of Mississippi is offering the Lott Leadership Institute (May 28- June 29 or June 25 – July 27). The cost is $600 plus textbooks and weekend meals. Students will earn six hours of college credit while participating in discussion groups, panels, and debates on issues confronting leaders of the 21st century. Participants will also travel to Washington D.C. to participate in discussions with state and national leaders. Some scholarships are available. Only 22 students per session will be admitted. Deadline: January 16, 2012
4. The Jobert J. Studkey Essay Contest is open to Missouri High School students in grades 9 – 12. Only one entry will be accepted from each school. The essay should be between1,200 and 1,500 words in length and should address one or more aspects of books and reading. See Mrs. Petrus for more details.

6. The YMCA is looking for a few students who would be willing to help out at their Pee Wee basketball games. You would be working the gate and in the concession stand. You would work from 8:30 a.m. to a little after noon. This would be an excellent and easy way to get some community service hours. You can sign up in Mrs. Miller’s room.

The last one will be Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Also remember that the application deadline is February 1, 2012. Only 35 students will be admitted.

- We will be rescheduling the Coffee House for an evening in January. With Christmas programs, basketball games, and holiday parties, we were having a conflict. We will post the new date in the bulletin soon.
- A couple of new images have been added to the display by Mr. Spence’s room. You can see artwork by Annina Fremgen and Jocey Vitela.
- Candy Cane-O-Grams are here! Order a candy cane to send to a friend, family member, special someone, anyone… For just $1 you will get a candy cane delivered to the person of your choice with a personalized message. These can be sent to any building on campus. Officers will be set up in the commons area each morning and the Bears den at lunch each day next week. If you want to send one anonymously please see Mrs. Brower. This money helps pay for prom, so your help is greatly appreciated!
- FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES: Don’t forget to order your class t-shirts with Mrs. Brower by December 21st. The cost is $13. If at least 12 people don’t order, they will be cancelled.
- JUNIORS: We are hosting a concession stand on December 22nd during the soccer tournament (Kristina Traver’s senior project). Mrs. Brower needs your donations of bottled water, bottled soda, gatorade, bake sale items, hotdogs and buns, or chili. Thanks to everyone who volunteered their time to work! See Mrs. Brower to sign up to donate items!
- Bears For A Better Christmas: Thanks to everyone for volunteering their time to help in this important community effort. There are still some time slots available on Saturday the 17th if you want to work at the toy give-away. Please see Mrs. Brower to sign up!

1. Students planning to take the dual credit college psychology class from Three Rivers Community College should meet with Mrs. Petrus in the Library TODAY at 8:30.
2. New artwork is on display in both hall cases. In Mr. Spence’s hall you can view artwork by Katerina Seu, Emily Wehmer, Sarah Corniels and Mariya Kharitonova. In Coach Mac’s hall you can see images by Inna Yakovleva, Annina Fremgen, Jocelyn Vitela, Josiah Collins, Irina Dashkevich, Anitoly Dashkevich, Katie Martin and Natalie Patterson. Enjoy!
3. The bear boosters are throwing a Christmas party for the football team and having a bon fire at the field, Friday at 5:30. There will be food. . .bring a friend.
4. JUNIORS: Your class shirts are in. . .stop in and pick them up from Mrs. Brower. She has 2 or 3 extra ($13 each).
5. December 15th we will be having our first Coffee House in the High School Library from 6-8:30. We are looking for students, parents, and teachers to participate. We invite you to sing, play instrument, or read a poem. This is also Marilla Welch’s Senior Project where she will be playing the piano. If you are interested in participating, please sign up in the library. We will be selling hot tea and coffee. Come, enjoy, and relax!
6. Kristina Dudko’s Senior Project is over Child Abuse Awareness. She will be hosting a Child Abuse awareness week, December 5th – 9th. Students who dress up will get their pictures taken for the presentation board. Also, spirit points will be awarded for each class. Show your class spirit and join her to help raise awareness. Be a voice for a hurting child.

1. SENIORS: The Elks National Foundation 2012 Most Valuable Student Scholarship Application is available. You must write a 500 word essay and provide your parent’s financial information for 2010. See Mrs. Petrus. Deadline: December 2, 2011.

5. The Bears for a Better Christmas 5K Run/Walk is going to be Saturday, December 10, at Palenske Field. Entry forms for the event may be picked up at the office window. If you register before Nov. 28, you will be guaranteed a race t-shirt. All proceeds go to the Bears for a Better Christmas Toy Drive.
